About Us

Breifne Historical Society was founded at a meeting in the Farnham Arms Hotel in Cavan on 13 January 1956.

It was founded as a non political and non sectarian historical society to promote interest in and the study of the local history of the ancient kingdom of Breifne.

The territory of Breifne was, in medieval times, ruled over by the O’Rourke and the O’Reilly chieftains and it corresponds to most of the present day counties of Cavan, Leitrim and south Fermanagh, as well as to the ecclesiastical diocese of Kilmore.

Breifne Historical Society hosts a series of lectures each year on various aspects of local and Irish history generally. It also organizes an annual tour to some place of historical interest. These tours normally take place in the summer months.

The society publishes a journal called ‘Breifne’ which is published in April or May of each year. The first journal was published in 1958 and forty three journals have been published since then. It is now recognized as one of the best and most reputable local history journals in Ireland.

About Us

Fúinn

Bunaíodh Cumann Seanchais Bhreifne ag cruinniú a eagraíodh in Óstán Fhearnáin, An Cabhán ar 13 Eanáir 1956.

Bunaíodh an cumann mar chumann neamhpholaitiúil agus neamhsheicteach chun suim an phobail a spreagadh i stair áitiúil ríocht ársa Bhreifne chomh maith le staidéar a dhéanamh uirthi.

I ré na meánaoise, bhí na Taoisigh ó Chlann Uí Ruairc agus ó Chlann Uí Raghallaigh i gceannas ar chríocha Bhreifne. Is ionann an chríoch agus Co. an Chabháin, Co. Liatroma agus Deisceart Fhear Manach chomh maith le deoise eaglasta na Cille Móire.

Cuireann Cumann Seanchais Bhreifne léachtaí difriúla i láthair achan bliain ar ghnéithe éagsúla den Stair áitiúil agus de Stair na hÉireann i gcoitinne. Eagraíonn an cumann turas bliantúil chuig áit spéisiúil ó thaobh na staire de. De ghnáth, eagraítear na turasanna i rith an tsamhraidh.

Foilsíonn an cumann iris dar teideal Breifne achan bliain, go hiondúil i mí Aibreáin nó i mí Bealtaine. Foilsíodh an chéad iris i 1958 agus tá níos mó ná caoga foilsithe ó shin i leith. Tá clú agus cáil ar an iris seo anois in Éirinn mar cheann de na hirisí staire áitiúla is fearr agus is creidiúnaí sa tír.
